ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a proactive form of psychotherapy rooted in traditional behavior therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. It encourages clients to embrace, rather than resist or deny, their internal emotions. By recognizing these emotions as valid reactions to certain situations, clients learn not to let them hinder their progress in life. This awareness leads them to accept their challenges and pledge to adapt their behavior, no matter their circumstances or feelings about them.
ACT was conceived in the 1980s by psychologist Steven C. Hayes at the University of Nevada. The foundational principles of ACT were influenced by Hayes’s personal experiences, notably his bouts with panic attacks. Over time, he committed to confronting his own struggles, choosing acceptance over avoidance.
ACCEPTANCE AND COMMITMENT THERAPY
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) has proven to be a valuable tool in addressing addiction. Addiction often stems from an individual’s attempt to avoid or numb uncomfortable emotions, memories, or sensations. ACT helps individuals understand and accept these feelings without resorting to substance use or addictive behaviors as a coping mechanism. By fostering a more open and accepting relationship with their internal experiences, individuals are less likely to be controlled by them.
ACT promotes psychological flexibility, helping those struggling with addiction to better adapt to life without the crutch of their addictive substance or behavior. Through defined exercises and mindfulness practices, ACT encourages individuals to live in alignment with their values and long-term goals, rather than succumbing to the immediate relief addiction might offer, ultimately guiding them towards a more fulfilling and balanced life.
